This production is based on Ingmar Bergman’s television drama From the Life of the Marionettes (1980), which was the only film he made in Germany. We meet two of the supporting characters from his Scenes from a Marriage, Peter and Katarina Egerman. Their marriage is troubled, but they remain tied to each other. One night Peter Egerman calls his psychiatrist after having murdered a prostitute. Why does an apparently well-adjusted man commit such a horrible crime? In this critically acclaimed performance, the characters come together in a lacquer red cage under a Japanese cherry tree in full bloom.

Director Andreas Kriegenburg was born in 1963. In the early 1990s he worked with the controversial director Frank Castorf at the high-profile Volksbühne theatre in Berlin. Since then, he has worked at several major German-speaking theatres including the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Kammerspiele in Munich, where his production of Hebbel’s Niebelungen was voted the best German stage production in 2005. He has been director in residence at the Thalia Theater since 2001. Kriegenburg is often described as a director of predominantly very physical theatre, including choreographed sequences, acrobatics and slapstick. One of his role models is the silent movie star Buster Keaton. He has worked at the Thalia since 2001.

The Thalia Theatre in Hamburg became a leading German theatre stage as an exponent for the modern so called “regie-theater” represented by directors such as Jürgen Gosch, Ruth Berghaus, Michael Thalheimer and Andreas Kriegenburg. In 2003 and 2007 the The Thalia was elected German Theatre of the Year.
