The Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival is proud to present a production by a truly original artistic talent. The name, Eraritjaritjaka, is said to be an Australian Aboriginal expression meaning “Full of yearning for something that has been lost”. The piece is based on short texts written by Nobel laureate Elias Canetti. Heiner Goebbels has created a unique performance involving a lone actor, a string quartet, special lighting effects, film and video. It includes a lesson in how to chop an onion in perfect time with the music of Ravel. Eraritjaritjaka received rave reviews when it was performed at the experimental Vidy theatre at Lausanne, Switzerland.

Cast: André Wilms has worked with Klaus-Michael Grüber (Faust) and Deborah Warner (A Doll’s House). He has also acted in films by Aki Kaurismäki (Bohemian Life) and Patrice Leconte (Monsieur Hire), and has directed a large number of theatre and opera productions.

Director: Heiner Goebbels, composer and director. Born in 1952, presently living in Frankfurt am Main. In the 1970s, Goebbels composed music for the theatre (such as productions directed by Claus Peymann and Matthias Langhoff), film and ballet. In the 1980s, he began to direct and compose music for his own radio plays, often based on texts by Heiner Müller. In the 1990s, he wrote several major orchestral works and became increasingly involved in staged concerts, which led to him working with experimental and creative musical drama.

Heiner Goebbels works across several genres. He has also exhibited his own artwork and sound installations at various major art exhibits such as the Documenta at Kassel in 1997 and has taught music and composition at several major conservatories. His first opera, Landscape with Distant Relatives, premiered in 2002. He has staged three productions for Théatre Vidy at Lausanne, one of them is Max Black, also with the actor Andé Wilms.

Eraritjaritjaka has received six international theatre festival awards.
