Cries and Whispers from 1972 is considered to be one of Bergman’s most intriguing films. Two sisters (Liv Ullman and Ingrid Thulin) and a servant are looking after a third sister, Agnes (Harriet Andersson), who is dying. Dutch director Ivo van Hove is well-known for his highly acclaimed stage version of Scenes from a Marriage. This time around, he is staging a co-production of Cries and Whispers at Dramaten.
“To be able to work with Bergman’s complex evocation of human suffering and compassion is both a challenge and an honour.” Ivo van Hove.
The play revolves around the theme that the death of a loved one forces you to face your own mortality and the way you live your life. You have to confront your own demons and reconsider the choices you have made.
