Marguerite Duras (1914–1996) was born to French parents in Indochina, a country that strongly came to shape her work. Another influence was her involvement in the French resistance during World War II. She is best-known for her autobiographical novel The Lover, written in 1984, about a fifteen-year-old girl’s relationship with an older Chinese businessman. Duras also wrote the script for the film Hiroshima mon amour and directed her own films, including India Song. The War: A Memoir (1986) is based on diaries she kept during the war while she was waiting for her husband Robert to return from the concentration camp at Dachau. By the time the war ended in 1945 she still did not know whether he was alive or not, and within her the war continued while people celebrated in the streets.

Dominique Blanc adds a unique resonance to Duras’ script. Her performance style is simple, yet intense. She met the director Patrice Chéreau when working on Peer Gynt in 1981, and they have made several successful productions together. In 1989, she was awarded her first César (she has since won another three), for her role in Louis Malles’ May Fools. She also participated in Chéreau’s film Queen Margot as well as in a large number of other French films.

Patrice Chéreau, born 1944, is a major French director for the stage. He has also made a number of films, including the acclaimed Queen Margot featuring Daniel Auteuil and Isabelle Adjani. In the 1980s, he produced plays by the young Bernard-Marie Koltès, including the world-famous In the Solitude of the Cotton Fields and Black Battles with Dogs. He has also directed Wagner’s Ring in Bayreuth, and in 2005, he produced his very special version of Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
